Where the 2026-27 admission stands now
The 2026-27 cycle is almost complete. On 6 October 2026 the Research and Development Cell (RDC) published the List of Selected Candidates for Provisional Admission in Ph.D. 2026. Selected candidates had to verify their documents and pay the fee by 9 October 2026, 6:00 pm; admission of anyone who missed it is cancelled as per the notice.
If you were not part of this cycle, the useful part of this guide is the process and the checklist: BAOU follows the same UGC rules every year, so you can start preparing now for the next advertisement.
BAOU Ph.D. vacant seats 2026-27 (subject-wise)
The official vacant seat list shows 32 seats. Most of them (28) are in the School of Humanities and Social Science, with English alone offering 12.
| School | Subject | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Humanities & Social Science | English | 12 |

| Total | 32 | |
The advertisement also allows inter-disciplinary research in the available disciplines. Seats change every year, so a subject with no vacancy this time (for example Political Science or Education) may open again later. You can see every subject in which BAOU runs a Ph.D. on our Ph.D. programme page.
Who can apply for a Ph.D. at BAOU?
BAOU admits Ph.D. scholars under the UGC Ph.D. Regulations, 2022. In simple terms, these regulations ask for:
- A master's degree (or an equivalent degree) with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade, or
- A 4-year bachelor's degree (8 semesters) with at least 75% marks or an equivalent grade.
- A relaxation of 5% (55% becomes 50%, 75% becomes 70%) for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled and EWS candidates, as per UGC rules.
Your master's degree should normally be in the same or a closely related subject. The BAOU advertisement is the final word on subject-wise conditions, so read it before you apply. If you are still choosing a master's programme, our list of BAOU post graduate programmes is a good starting point.
BAOU Ph.D. admission process, step by step
- Read the advertisement and vacant seat list. Check that your subject has a vacancy and that you meet the eligibility.
- Apply online on the university website, baou.edu.in. For 2026-27 the last date was extended to 31 May 2026.
- Send the hard copy. Print the submitted form and submit it, with self-attested documents, at the university by the hard copy deadline (6 June 2026 this year).
- Check the screening lists. RDC publishes a list that marks every applicant as Eligible, Conditional Eligible or Not Eligible, and shows who is exempted from the entrance test. In 2026 this list was revised twice (29 June and 1 July 2026), so always open the latest one.
- Appear in the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) unless you are in the exempted list. Download the hall ticket from the RDC hall ticket portal before the exam.
- PET result. Candidates who clear PET are listed as eligible for the personal interview.
- Research presentation and personal interview / viva-voce at the main campus, subject by subject (see below).
- Provisional selection list is published on the website.
- Document verification and fee payment at the Research and Development Cell before the deadline. After this your provisional admission is confirmed, subject to eligibility.
- Coursework starts, as required by the UGC regulations, before you move fully into research.
Who is exempted from PET? In the 2026 lists, candidates with a valid UGC-NET / JRF, GSET (Gujarat State Eligibility Test) or an M.Phil. were shown as exempted; the advertisement lists the exact categories. You can verify NET results on the official UGC-NET (NTA) website. The same lists show the usual reasons for being marked Not Eligible or Conditional Eligible: a NET score that was no longer valid, a master's degree in a subject not allied to the chosen Ph.D. subject, and a latest caste certificate that was not attached.
Research presentation and personal interview
This is the stage that decides most selections, so prepare for it seriously. For 2026-27 the interviews were held at Digital Classroom - I, "Jyotirmay Parisar", BAOU, S.G. Highway, Chharodi, Ahmedabad:
| Subject | Date & time |
|---|---|
| Computer Science | 8 September 2026, 11:00 am |
| Sanskrit / IKS / Hindu Studies | 18 September 2026, 11:00 am |
| Sociology | 18 September 2026, 3:00 pm |
| History | 18 September 2026, 5:00 pm |
| Journalism & Mass Communication | 19 September 2026, 11:00 am |
| Economics | 19 September 2026, 12:00 pm |
| Gujarati | 19 September 2026, 3:00 pm |
| Commerce | 21 September 2026, 12:00 pm |
| English | 28 September 2026, 10:30 am |
What to carry: two printed copies of your research proposal and the proposal presentation as a PowerPoint (.pptx) file on a pen drive. Report at least 30 minutes before your slot.
How to prepare the proposal: keep it short and focused. A clear title, the research problem, why it matters, 4-6 key studies you have read, your objectives, the method you plan to use and a realistic timeline are usually enough. Expect questions on why you chose the topic and how it fits the department's expertise.
BAOU Ph.D. fees for the 2026 session
Provisionally selected candidates pay this amount at the time of document verification:
| Fee head | Amount |
|---|---|
| Ph.D. registration fee | ₹1,000 |
| 1st semester fee | ₹10,000 |
| Coursework fee | ₹5,000 |
| Total at admission | ₹16,000 |
This is only the first payment. Semester fees continue for the following semesters, and there are separate charges for thesis submission and the viva voce. The full fee table is on our Ph.D. programme page; confirm the current amounts with the university before you pay.
Scholarship help: SC research scholars can look at the M.Phil./Ph.D. thesis assistance scheme (BCK-11) on the Digital Gujarat portal. Our BAOU scholarship guide explains how to apply.
Documents checklist for verification
Carry the originals and one set of self-attested photocopies:
- Marksheets of all semesters/years and the degree certificates (graduation and master's).
- UGC-NET / JRF, GSET or M.Phil. certificate, if you were exempted from PET (check the validity date of NET).
- Latest non-creamy layer certificate (OBC) or EWS certificate, or SC/ST caste certificate, issued by the competent authority, if you applied in a reserved category.
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your present employer, if you are employed.
- A copy of your submitted application form and a photo ID such as Aadhaar.
Admission stays provisional until the university verifies these documents and your minimum eligibility.

Tips if you are planning for the next session
- Keep your NET/JRF valid. If your score is close to expiry, check whether it will still be valid on the cut-off date mentioned in the next advertisement.
- Collect every semester marksheet and a fresh caste certificate now. A missing latest caste certificate made several 2026 applicants only "conditionally eligible".
- Check that your master's subject is allied. A master's degree outside the Ph.D. subject (without allied subjects) was a reason for rejection in 2026.
- Start the research proposal early. Read recent papers in your subject and narrow down one clear problem; it makes the interview much easier.
- Use an email and phone number you check daily. RDC sends updates by email and publishes lists on the website without much notice.
- Revisit the official lists. Lists are often revised; always open the newest PDF before you act.
